The program will serve a total of 87 Kenyan youth and young professionals. At least 50% will be from counties outside of Kenya’s five largest metropolitan areas. 15 American university students and 12 American professional mentors will also support the program virtually. The first component of the program will serve 60 of high school students aged 15-18 in underserved communities in Nairobi and Kisumu. These participants will enroll in Green- Kenya’s Kick and Conserve program, which uses soccer to inspire youth to develop leadership skills, healthy habits, and an awareness of local environmental issues.

The second component of the program will serve 15 American and 15 Kenyan university students aged 18-26 to join together in a virtual environmental leadership program focused on environmental literacy, leadership development, civic engagement, and eco-entrepreneurship. The Kenyan cohort will also engage in an in-person project segment and community event after the virtual training.

The third component will convene 10 Kenyan CBO & NGO leaders aged 18-30 for two three-day institutes in Kisumu. We will target senior leaders, particularly founders of small and medium-sized organizations who train youth to make a positive environmental impact in their communities. With the support of our Kisumu-based partner, Women in Sustainable Enterprises (WISE) and U.S.-based partner, 10 Billion Strong, we will design and implement training to enhance the organizations’ abilities to achieve their missions. WISE will focus on sharing their proven models for building strong businesses through eco-entrepreneurship during the first Environmental Leadership Institute to be held in January.  The NGO leaders will be matched with mentors from the U.S. to support their work. Organizations from counties outside of Kenya’s five largest metropolitan areas will be eligible for small grants to implement projects.

10 Billion Strong will further support management and leadership capacity training during the second Environmental Leadership Institute to be held in June. We will also focus on creating a broader narrative of advancing environmental justice in Kenya, refining business models, addressing management challenges, and creating structures for thoughtfully designed strategic plans and related Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). The NGO leaders will be matched with mentors to help finalize the strategic plans and KPIs and the during the implementation process
